Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes body fat deposits that are resistant to traditional fat loss methods like diet and exercise. The goal of liposuction is to reshape and redefine areas that are not losing fat naturally.
If you’re considering liposuction, chances are you’re planning to do a bit of research before undergoing the procedure. Read below to learn a few things you might want to know before you make your appointment with Carolinas Center for Plastic Surgery.
What to Know About Liposuction
Am I a good candidate?
Liposuction is not an alternative to natural weight loss methods. The procedure will offer the highest success rate to people who are at or near their ideal weight, but cannot seem to shake deposits of fat in specific areas. The ideal candidate will have a BMI of 30 or lower.
What parts of the body can be reshaped through liposuction?
People opt to receive liposuction to contour areas such as the hips, legs, abdomen, buttocks, back, neck, face, arms, and breasts.
How does the procedure work?
Smartlipo® at Carolinas Center for Plastic Surgery is slightly different than traditional tumescent liposuction. It uses smaller, more minimal incisions and only requires a local anesthetic. Smartlipo® uses two high-powered lasers to melt fat from the treatment area, all while producing a tightening effect on the overlying skin.
What are the risks?
Liposuction is generally a very safe procedure, but like any surgical procedure, there are risks that can be associated with it. While very uncommon, risks can include scarring and skin discoloration, dimpling, and bagginess of the skin.
How long is the recovery from liposuction?
With Smartlipo® at Carolinas Center for Plastic Surgery, recovery time is much quicker. Most patients can return to work one to two days after their procedure. There will still be swelling and bruising at that time.
